Work Permit Application

Additional Information

The following is the procedure for work permit application for expatriate(s) in the Petroleum Upstream Industry. Please note that Work Permits are for specialized skills that are not readily available in Ghana.

 

Submission of Application Form and related Documents

A correctly filled Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Work Permit Application Form (which can be obtained from the Petroleum Commission or Ghana Immigration Form) MUST be submitted to the Petroleum Commission with the under-listed documents:

  1. Applicant(s) may be invited for interview
  2. Cover letter must provide detailed justification for employing an expatriate
  3. The Police Clearance Certificate of employee MUST NOT be more than one (1) year old
  4. The Medical Certificate MUST NOT be more than two (2) years old
  5. Work Permit applications MUST be submitted to the Commission for onward transmission to Ghana Immigration Service (GIS). Under no circumstances should applications be made directly to GIS.
  6. Approved Work Permits must be collected from the Commission and not directly from GIS
  7. The Commission must be notified of all vacancies through the dedicated email address (i.e humanresourcecommittee@petrocom.gov.gh)
  8. For both new and renewal applications:
    1. The names of Ghanaians understudying the expatriate must be provided
    2. The CV of the Ghanaians must also be provided
    3. The localization forms (Template A for fresh applications; and Template A & B for renewal applications) must be correctly completed and attached
  9. Renewal applications must be submitted to the Commission two (2) months prior to expiration of the applicant’s Work Permit.
  10. Applications for work permits must be synchronized with Annual Local Content Plans to be submitted to the Commission.

 

Assessment and Evaluation of Application

The outcome, following assessment, will be one of the following:

 

  1. Refusal – application lacks merit
  2. Additional information required – recommendation for approval will be subject to additional information being provided
  3. Satisfactory – application satisfies all the requirements hence recommendation for approval by GIS.
